Would you like to work with x2y?
x2y LGBT Youth Group supports lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and questioning (LGBTQ+) young people in Wolverhampton and surrounding areas. We are currently seeking to fill two vacancies (both are fixed term contracts for one year):
- Young adults’ support worker: 3 hours per week @ £15.00 per hour (self-employed)
- Schools’ link worker: 3 hours per week @ £15.00 per hour (self-employed, term time only)
The successful applicant for the Young adults’ support worker post will be motivated, well-organised and able to work well independently. You will need to have a good understanding of the challenges facing LGBTQ+ young people in the 18 to 25 age group, and have the ability to support them to make positive choices, gain confidence and value themselves and others. You will work with the service users to co-develop a varied programme of activities aimed at increasing confidence and building up their knowledge of networks and resources in Wolverhampton and the surrounding region. See job description and person specification below.
The successful applicant for the Schools’ link worker post will be motivated, well-organised and able to work well independently. You will need to have a good understanding of the needs of LGBTQ+ young people and the challenges facing them, and have the ability to support schools to meet their specific needs and become LGBT-friendly and inclusive. We are looking for a person, or an organisation, with a track record of training education professionals. See job description and person specification below.
Current provision: x2y currently operates a drop-in open access youth group in Wolverhampton City Centre on a Saturday from 1.00 to 3.00 pm for the 11 to 25 age range. It also provides telephone, email and social media support for LGBTQ young people, or any young person questioning their sexual orientation or gender identity who gets in touch and would like to know more about the group.
Our plans: x2y has successfully bid for funding from Awards for All for these two posts for one year. We intend to split the existing youth group into two, keeping our existing group for the 11 to 17 age range on a Saturday and starting another for the 18 to 25 age group. The new group for young adults is intended to take place on a Saturday initially, but then move to a weekday evening, and will be facilitated by the newly appointed Young adults’ support worker. x2y is also keen to strengthen our links with Wolverhampton schools, providing advice, guidance and staff training on LGBTQ+ equality. This will be the role of the new Schools’ link worker. We recently carried out a needs assessment about LGBTQ young people in Wolverhampton and a key finding was that they felt schools could do more to support them and to address homophobia, bi-phobia and transphobia.
x2y is committed to safeguarding children and young people and adults at risk of abuse and carries out safer recruitment processes in line with local and national guidance. Both posts are subject to an enhanced DBS and barred list check.
